Calls began flooding into 911 at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, with reports of a shooting in Troy, near 6th Avenue and 103rd Street.
When officers arrived, they found the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
He was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
So far, police have not released the victim’s name pending notification of his relatives.
Investigators determined that the boy had been standing outside with a group of people when shots rang out. Police believe the group, or the boy specifically, was targeted by the gunman.
No suspects had been arrested as of 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, and Troy Police were asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.
"Like many Troy residents, I am both shocked and outraged at the senseless loss of another young life to gun violence in our community,” Troy Mayor Patrick Madden said in a statement.
“My office is fully supporting the investigation by Troy Police who have committed the resources necessary to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.”
The slain teen was set to begin his freshman year at Lansingburgh High School in Troy on Tuesday, Sept. 6, according to a statement from the Lansingburgh Central School District.
The district said counseling services would be available Monday, Aug. 29, for any Lansingburgh students who needed it.
Just hours after the teen was killed, police in Albany responded to a shooting on Hamilton Street in the Pine Hills neighborhood at around 3 a.m.
At the time, officers were busy clearing a large, unruly crowd that had grown violent on Hudson Avenue near Quail Street.
Individuals in the crowd were fighting with one another and threw glass bottles at officers who attempted to break them up, police said.
While officers were still clearing out the group, they heard multiple gunshots ring out a block away, near Hamilton and Ontario streets.
That’s where they found five victims, ranging in age from 19 to 29, all suffering from gunshot wounds, police said.
All five victims were treated at the scene and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where a 20-year-old man and 29-year-old man were listed in critical condition.
The three other victims were in stable condition, according to police.
Shortly after the call, a 17-year-old Schenectady girl called 911 saying she had been shot in the abdomen while on Hamilton Street.
She was taken to the hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Albany Police are still working to identify a suspect and no arrests had been made as of 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29.
